Sundowns join elite list of invincibles in 2023/24

With domestic football on a break, African giants Mamelodi Sundowns now boast a unique record this season matched by two top European clubs and a Saudi team. Read on to find out more!

The 2023/24 campaign is approaching its final stages, with just two months' worth of club football remaining. Sundowns are well poised to get their hands on multiple trophies this term to add to their inaugural African Football League triumph in November 2023. In addition to making yet another quarter-final appearance in the CAF Champions League, the Pretoria outfit are also within grasp of a spot in the 2025 FIFA World Cup.

However, what is arguably the greatest achievement for them at this stage of the season is that they are part of a very select group of top-flight clubs who remain unbeaten in league football in 2023/24.

Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa)

Masandawana hold a 13-point lead at the summit of the DStv Premiership, with zero defeats in 18 matches so far. Rulani Mokwena's charges have claimed 14 league wins and four draws, while keeping things tight at the back, having conceded just five goals at this stage. Following a 1-1 draw with town rivals SuperSport United last week, Bafana Ba Style stretched their league unbeaten run to a staggering 42 games, according to SuperSport.

Xabi Alonso's side is on course to make history in the German top flight, where they hold a massive 10-point lead over second-placed Bayern Munich. In 26 Bundesliga games, Leverkusen have registered zero defeats, 22 wins and four draws. The club is also unbeaten in all 38 games they have played across all competitions so far this season, with their impressive results prompting widespread interest in their head coach, Alonso. With the side having the unwanted title of "Neverkusen" for having never won the German championship, they are now in the driving seat to break Bayern's streak of 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles, and in spectacular fashion too.

PSV Eindhoven (Netherlands)

In the Netherlands, the tide has dramatically shifted over the past few seasons, with giants Ajax Amsterdam have fallen off the cliff, so to speak. Last season, Feyenoord were crowned Eredivisie champions, while PSV Eindhoven are in pole position to lift the crown in 2023/24, and they remain unbeaten in 26 Dutch league matches. They hold a 10-point lead at the top of the standing, with just eight games to go.

The Saudi giants recently made headlines for setting a new world record for the most consecutive victories in men's football, according to CNN. To date, Al Hilal have registered an impressive 28 wins in a row, whilst winning 22 of their 24 Saudi Pro League matches and drawing the other two. Manager Jorge Jesus has been modest about the feat, saying: "Records do not matter as much as trophies. It is up to everyone at Al-Hilal to ensure that we close out the season as Roshan Saudi League champions and meet our targets in the cup competitions. Only then can we truly celebrate."
