Man Utd coach breaks silence after Onana's costly mistakes

Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim has opened up about after Andre Onana's costly error in the team's 2-2 draw against Lyon in the UEFA Europa League match on Thursday.

The English Premier League team shared the spoils with the Ligue 1 club following a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the quarterfinals at the Parc Olympique Lyonnais Stadium.

Onana was at fault for both of Lyon's goals. These errors come after the Cameroonian faced significant criticism from Red Devils legend and midfielder Nemanja Matic, who labeled him as one of the worst shot-stoppers that United has ever had.

Additionally, since the beginning of the current campaign, Onana has committed costly mistakes leading to goals, which may have contributed to the team currently occupying the 13th position in the league standings.

Nonetheless, Amorim, who joined the club in November 2024, has stepped up to defend the 29-year-old African goalkeeper, asserting that mistakes are a part of the game.

"There's nothing I can say to Andre in this moment that will help him," Amorim, per TNT Sport.

"The most important thing is to be natural and then when the time comes, I will choose the best XI to play. But I'm really confident in Andre. We continue to do the same thing. Training, seeing the games, trying to choose the best 11 to win every match.

"It can happen (mistakes), if you play football, a lot of games, you can make mistakes. If you look at the season, I've made more mistakes than them in these last games and during this last month.

"The best thing is to look at the goals [that Onana conceded], the actions that Andre had in the game, and to talk to the [goalkeeping coaches]," the coach explained.

"That's the best thing to do, to help every player to show what happened in the game and what we need to improve, and then put it to the player again."

United will host Lyon at the Old Trafford Stadium for the second leg of the quarterfinals on Thursday, April 18.
