Nothing final for Ramoreboli despite getting Botswana to AFCON

Recent statements indicate that South African coach Morena Ramoreboli has not yet officially signed his contract as the Botswana national team head coach, more than a month after helping them qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

In November 2024, Botswana secured their spot at AFCON 2025 in Morocco after finishing second in their qualifying group behind Egypt.

Ramoreboli was named Botswana's caretaker coach in late October following the departure of former boss Didier Gomes.

Two draws against Mauritania and Egypt were enough to guarantee Botswana a place in the 24-team tournament, marking their first qualification for the competition since 2012.

Notably, Ramoreboli was tasked with managing Botswana while still coaching local side Jwaneng Galaxy. However, the club this week appointed Dutch tactician Pieter de Jongh as their permanent replacement.

According to SABC journalist Velile Mnyandu, Ramoreboli has revealed that he is yet to sign a permanent contract as Botswana head coach.

"To be honest with you, Bra V, I think it's a very tricky question to answer because, yes, it's true that there's a coach that's with the club [Jwaneng], but I think it's more of an administrative question which I will also appreciate if my stable Brand Arc can answer," said Ramoreboli.

"Because I think it's more administrative, there are other things that I think, at this stage, are difficult for me to say until everything administratively has been finalised."

He added: "I was given the opportunity to help the national team to qualify for AFCON, which I felt we did good work in achieving, and yes, there have been discussions between Brand Arc and the Botswana Football Association (BFA).

"But it is also a matter of the two parties agreeing on certain things, and maybe that's when there will be a proper direction on how to take things forward.

"But I also want to take the opportunity to thank the president of the BFA, Mr Tariq Babitseng, for the opportunity, along with the technical committee, the deputy president, the CEO, the FA, the Botswana Premier League, and the clubs.

"For me, I think the most important thing is to grow as a coach and help football in the country to grow, but at the same time, like I said, it's for those dealing with administrative issues to guide us on what to say and what not to say."
