OFFICIAL: Club makes decision on Alves after shock arrest

Brazil legend Dani Alves' club has made a big decision on the player following his shock arrest on the weekend.

The Selecao star was arrested on Friday in Barcelona after reportedly flying to Spain from Mexico, and is being held in custody for an ongoing case that has shocked the football world, in which he is said to have sexually assaulted a woman at a nightclub in the Spanish city in December.

Following the arrest, Leopoldo Silva, the president of UNAM Pumas – the Mexican club Alves joined after leaving FC Barcelona in July last year – confirmed, per France 24, that they have "made the decision to terminate the player's employment contract with just cause.

"The club reiterates its commitment not to tolerate acts by any member of our institution, whoever they may be, that go against the university spirit and its values."

Just hours before the arrest, Dani Alves' wife Joana Sanz seemingly showed her support for her husband by taking to social media to post a photo of them holding hands along with the message "Together" in English.

Blaugrana boss Xavi Hernandez, meanwhile, has made a U-turn on his initial controversial comments about the fullback being taken into custody, for which he was judged to have negated the experience of the alleged victim.

He has since apologised, saying: "People misinterpreted what I was trying to say about the Dani Alves situation. I didn't mention the victims. It must be denounced. I was wrong, and I apologise.

"... I want to apologise and support the victim. I understand that they're not going through the best situation. I'm sorry."

According to Cadena SER, Alves has been requested to testify again after offering three different versions of the events that took place in the nightclub in December.

The Selecao right-back's brother Ney has since suggested that Dani may get a new lawyer.

"We are powerless in this situation," his brother said, per BeSoccer.

"I think the lawyer is not doing well."
