Woman killed during stadium brawl

A woman has now been confirmed dead after being hit with a bottle of beer during a stadium brawl this weekend. 

Brazilian authorities have confirmed that they have made an arrest in connection with the death of a 23-year-old women, who was struck by the object during a fight that broke out between Palmeiras and Flamengo fans, according to ESPN.

The victim has been identified as Palmeiras supporter Gabriela Anelli and her passing comes not long after the incident took place on Sunday, in a game that saw the two sides finish in a 1-1 draw at the Allianz Parque Stadium in Sao Paulo.

It is reported that the woman had no sinister involvement in the chaotic scenes and was struck in the neck while simply eating and drinking in the home team's supporters zone after a man started throwing various object in their direction.

It is alleged that she severed her jugular vein, causing her untimely death after being taken to hospital. The alleged perpetrator immediately admitted his guilt.

Palmeiras issued a statement over the weekend following the the game, condemning the supporters for the violent scenes that took place. The club insisted that they "cannot accept that a 23-year-old woman be a victim of barbarism in a place that should be for entertainment".

Police had to use teargas to try and restore peace at the arena, resulting in two lengthy stoppages, while the home side also complained that such incidents ruin the image of Brazilian football across the world.

It is reported that every game this coming weekend in the Brazilian top-flight will be accompanied by a minute of silence prior to kick-off in Anelli's memory.

The president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, Ednaldo Rodrigues, said, "Just like in the issue of racism, it is enough [of violence].

"Soccer is about passion and not a place for infiltrated criminals to act with violence."
