Story behind the only Cape Verdean to ever play in the PSL

When Bafana Bafana take to the field against Cape Verde in Yamoussoukro on Saturday few will hold any memories about the only footballer from the island country to ever play in the DStv Premiership.

At the start of the 2008/09 season straight after Rudi Krol's arrival at Orlando Pirates, there suddenly arrived a lanky forward named Jerri Adriano Moreno Pires.

His names sounded relevant to football with Adriano, the burly Brazilian, already established whole Pires, the French winger, had just recently left Arsenal.

Pirates needed further options to Gilbert Mushangazhike and Excellent Walaza so it was felt Pires would be the answer.

Having worked in North Africa before, Krol had an idea about Pires and so felt it was worthy of giving him the chance.

Whatever blinded the Bucs into being convinced that Pires was good enough to be given a contract remains a mystery.

Though he had come in after having played in Cape Verde, Portugal, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, and Algeria – Pires just didn't fit in at Pirates.

In the five appearances (two starts and three substitute appearances) that he was never anywhere close to scoring despite playing as a number nine.

He made his debut against Bidvest as a substitute and started the next match against Bay United before coming in from the bench at home against Santos.

Two games later he was introduced in the second half against Free State Stars before his last appearance turned into disaster against Ajax Cape Town.

Before Christmas, the writing was already on the wall that it was over for him at Pirates.

The player ultimately became a regular in the stands, glad in his favourite designer sunglasses waiting for his contract to be terminated just before June 2009 so that he could leave.

Fortunate for Pirates was that Pires' contract had a clause stating he had to score a minimum of eight goals in his first season to get all his signing-on fees.

After his exit from Pirates, he went on to familiar territory in Tunisia where his career fizzled out.

Pires' handlers included an agent of Nigerian descent who breaks out in laughter when reminded of Pires.
