AFCON 2019: Why Bafana Bafana could qualify for last-16 without a win against Morocco

After securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Namibia, Bafana Bafana have given themselves a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages even if they lose to Morocco.

South Africa grabbed their first three points on Friday evening at the Africa Cup of Nations after their Group D opening defeat to Ivory Coast.

While questions have been raised over the quality of the performances in Egypt, Stuart Baxter's side look to be in pole position to qualify for the last-16.

Now, going into the final rounds of fixtures, Bafana are leading the table of the third placed side's with the four nations qualifying within that format.

The result between Benin and Guinea-Bissau on Saturday and the several draws before the encounter has given South Africa a massive advantage going into the their final Group D clash against Herve Renard's fomidable outfit.

If South Africa win or draw, qualification is guaranteed but a loss could still see them through if results elsewhere go their way.

Stuart Baxter's men are currently third place in the best-placed third sides, which will qualify the 1994 African champions for the knockout stages, with Guinea and DR Congo in first and second - after three games played.

Kenya occupy the fourth and final spot, meaning if the Guinea Bissau, Angola, Benin, Namibia and Mauritania fail to secure three points, South Africa will advance to the next round of the continental showpiece.

South Africa play the Atlas Lions tonight at Al Salam stadium at 19:00 (GMT+2) for their final Group D fixture.
