Africa Cup of Nations match report Congo DR v Uganda

Uganda claimed their first Africa Cup of Nations win since 1978 with a 2-0 victory over Congo at Cairo International Stadium on Saturday.

The Leopards had the first shot on target of the game. Arthur Masuaku played a lovely defence-splitting pass through for Cedric Bakambu, who did well to swivel in the box but his effort was weak and straight at Ugandan captain and goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

The Cranes took the lead slightly against the run of play in the 15th minute. Farouk Miya whipped in the corner from the left to the near post where Patrick Kaddu was on hand to head home.

Soon after, Uganda almost doubled their lead. Bevis Mugabi delivered a delightful cross in to the box from the right-hand side but Kaddu's header this time failed to hit the target when he really should have done better.

The Congolese defence was looking shaky as Uganda came close again just moments afterwards. A cross to the back post this time from the left-hand side found Kaddu in space once again, but he could not convert another glaring opportunity with his head.

Ugandan left-sided midfielder Khalid Aucho then brought a fine save out of Ley Matampi with a fiercely struck long-range effort.

Soon after, Yannick Bolasie headed inches wide from a Paul-José M'Poku corner - by far Congo's best chance of the match so far.

Five minutes before the interval, Cranes' midfielder Michael Azira's piledriver grazed the top of the crossbar when it looked destined for the top left-hand corner.

In the 42nd minute, M'Poku threaded the ball through for Bakambu, who turned and made himself space before curling an effort towards the bottom left-hand corner, but it was brilliantly turned around the post by Onyango with his fingertips.

The Cranes doubled their lead two minutes in to the second-half. Emmanuel Okwi won the free-kick after being brought down by Djo Issama Mpeko on the edge of the box. Miya crossed from the left to the near post where Okwi was on hand to guide the header in to the far corner.

In the 56th minute, Merveille Bokadi fouled Miya on the edge of the box. Miya dusted himself off and struck a stinging free-kick to the top right-hand corner but it was well dealt with by Matampi in the Congo goal.

The Leopards almost pulled a goal back in the 70th minute when Jonathan Bolingi hit the bar with a header from Bokadi's ball over the top.

The game petered out towards the end probably due to the very hot conditions as Uganda went top of the group above hosts Egypt on goal difference.
