Egypt secured their spot in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations with a 2-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The hosts looked to build on their opening day win with an all-out attack against the DRC, who hoped to liven up their campaign after their loss to Uganda.
Egypt were first to threaten as early as the third minute with a snap-shot from Mohamed Salah, which needed a timeous abortion. A scary moment then ensued nine minutes in when Marcel Tisserand hit the crossbar from a corner after lunching at a flick-on inside the area.
The Pharaohs were put at ease inside the 25th minute with an intricate finish from Ahmed El Mohamady following a goalmouth scramble. A well-taken free-kick from Salah five minutes later nearly led to a second, but Ley Matampi expertly palmed to safety.
The woodwork kept out Congo once more following Jonathan Bolingi's header five minutes to the interval, before Egypt doubled their lead three minutes to the break with a well-drilled near-post finish from Salah after some great work by Mahmoud Trezeguet.
The Congolese made a change at the break in line with launching a come back, as Elia Meschak came on for Mabi Mputu.
A slow start marred the opening exchanges, with neither defence tested nor threatened by any means. As a result, Egypt brought on their first change after 59 minutes, with Ahmed Hassan replacing Marwan Mohsen.
In the final minutes, the match became a worn out contest though Yannick Bolasie went inches away from halving the tally with a promising free-kick in the final 10 minutes.
The Egyptians though wrapped the evening's work at the expense of the DRC, who are the first side to exit the tournament.
