Africa Cup of Nations match report Kenya v Tanzania

A brace from Michael Olunga inspired Kenya to a 3-2 win over Tanzania in their Group C Africa Cup of Nations encounter.

Kenya made three changes from the loss to Algeria, as David Owino, Eric Ouma and Johanna Omolo came in, with Algeria doing likewise with the inclusion of Erasto Nyoni, Thomas Ulimwengu and Faridi Mussa.

The Harambee Stars were pegged back in the sixth minute by Simon Msuvan who smashed home a rebound after Patrick Matasi failed to gather. Kenya threatened a reply after 20 minutes when Aishi Manula pushed Francis Kahata's corner on to the crossbar with Michael Olunga's header hitting the same object.

Needing to up the ante particularly in the last third, the Kenyans installed John Avire for Kahata to reinvigorate their attack after 32 minutes.

The switch brought dividends instantaneously as Olunga's overhead kick after 39 minutes levelled matters. Joy was cut short a minute later after Mbwana Samata took matters into his own hands with a solo finish that put paid to a pacey half of football.

Kenya introduced a second change at the restart, as Bernard Ochieng came on for Owino at wingback, before the Tanzanians made a change after 52 minutes, as Himid Mkami entered the fray for Mudathiri Yahya.

In the final quarter, the Kenyans drew level after 62 minutes with a composed finish from Omolo inside the area.

The match opened up in the final minutes, as chances fell to both nations with Samata and Eric Omondi unable to profit.

Kenya went in front for the first time after 80 minutes with a well-worked finish from Olunga following Omondi's assist. The Taifa Stars pushed for a come back towards full-time, but the Kenyans held on to eliminate their East African neighbours while reviving their tournament.
