Africa Cup of Nations match report Namibia v Ivory Coast

Ivory Coast advanced to round of 16 with a 4-1 thrashing of Namibia in their final Africa Cup of Nations Group D encounter.

Following a disappointing loss to Morocco, the Ivorians made four changes as Jean-Philippe Gbamin, Mamadou Bagayoko, Wilfried Kanon, Wilfried Zaha and Wilfried Bony were brought in.

The Brave Warriors, whose only switch from the defeat to South Africa included Marcel Papama, started with little fear with the West Africans struggling to penetrate. In to the 24th minute, Peter Shalulile connected with a low cross from Deon Hotto for a low shot inside the area which Sylvian Ghobouo parried away.

However, The Namibian were behind against the run of play 40 minutes in after Max Gradel beat the offside trap to volley past Lazarus Kazapua and send the Elephants in to the break leading.

After a quiet start to the second half, the Elephants took the liberty to double their tally after 58 minutes with a deflected strike from Serey Die.

A substitution occured on 61 minutes, with Willy Stephanus installed for Papama in the middle of the park, while Ivory Coast made their first change in the next seven minutes, as Maxwel Cornet replaced the opening scorer Gradel.

Namibia soon brought the tally to a single margin with a close-range finish from Joslin Kamatuka in the final 19 minutes.

After a couple of changes, the 2015 champions restored their two-goal advantage in the final eight minutes with a finish from Zaha, before Cornet capped off the rout a minute before added time, with a well-composed effort from close range, as the Elephants barge in to the knockout stages as runners-up of Group D.
