Africa Cup of Nations match report Nigeria v Guinea

Nigeria advanced to the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-0 win over Guinea in a Group B clash.

After providing the winner from the bench against Burundi, Odion Ighalo started for Nigeria with Naby Keita lining up for the Guineans.

Guinea's intentions were clear as early as the first minute when a powerful shot from Ibrahima Cisse stinged the palms of goalkeeper Daniel Akpeyi.

Nigeria's first decent chance came after 31 minutes when Ighalo flashed the side-netting from a tight angle after running on to a through pass. Iwobi then went close five minutes later with a low shot from the edge of the area after combining with Ndidi.

Nigeria's persistence didn't regress at the start of the second half, with little space offered to Guineans who struggled to get to advancing areas.

With 60 minutes gone, Iwobi's curler from the right nearly granted Nigerian the lead but Ibrahima Kone made himself big with an outstretched save.

Guinea looked for a brighter spark in the final 20 minutes and brought on Ismaila Bangoura for Keita across the middle of the park.

The switch scuffed three minutes later, as Kenneth Omeruo nodded the three-time African kings in front from a corner.

Gernot Rohr balanced perspectives inside the 77th minute, with Villarreal's Samuel Chukwueze replacing Iwobi.

The Syli National's race practically run, as the Nigerians dropped deep to persevere their lead and advance to the last 16 with a game to spare.
