Africa Cup of Nations match report Nigeria v Tunisia

Nigeria secured the bronze medal at the Africa Cup of Nations with a 1-0 win over Tunisia in the third/fourth place play-off match on Wednesday evening.

In goal, Francis Uzoho earned his tournament debut while full-back Ola Aina was re-called for the Super Eagles. Moez Ben Cherifa, Nassim Hnid, Ghaylene Chaalali and Anice Badri formed Tunisia's four changes.

After just three minutes, Odion Ighalo extended his tally at the top of the charts with a tap-in from slack defending by the North Africans.

Soon afterwards, Tunisia went forward for a quick reply but Badri, Yassine Khenissi and Wahbi Khazri failed to outsmart the Nigerian defence.

Closer to the interval, the Super Eagles reappeared back in the contest with a half-chance from Alex Iwobi which failed to bother Cherifa.

A halftime substitution for the Super Eagles saw Ighalo departing through injury for fellow marksman Victor Osimhen.

Tunisia looked for a come back on 57 minutes, but Badri couldn't get the better of Uzoho following Chaalali's assist outside the area. That was to be the last piece of action for Badri, who vacated his role a minute later for Dijon-based attacking midfielder Naim Sliti.

Whilst lulling their way back in to the contest, injury plagued the Carthage Eagles' objective after 67 minutes with Hnid sacrificed for Rami Bedoui.

Nigeria managed to gather pace of the encounter despite the pressure from their counterparts, who attacked vigorously for an equaliser.

The final minutes threw up chances at either end, but neither side were able to seize the moment as the Nigerians grabbed third spot in the tournament.
