Africa Cup of Nations match report Uganda v Senegal

Senegal booked their spot in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-finals with a 1-0 victory over Uganda on Friday evening.

The two nations left nothing to chance, unleashing their star qualities in Denis Onyango and Sadio Mane respectively.

A closely contested opening marred with short-passes and high-pressed defending ensued from either side. Not long after, Senegal put their noses in front 15 minutes in after Mane capitalised on a fast-paced counterattack to finish past Onyango.

Uganda made an injury enforced change three minutes later after Timothy Awany replaced Hassan Wasswa in defence.

Regardless, a response was needed from the Cranes but half-hearted attempts from Emmanuel Okwi and Awany failed to yield any fruitful outcome.

The Teranga Lions made a slow start to the second half, with Uganda pushing loads of bodies in to advanced areas.

The latter made their second change after 57 minutes, with Allan Kyambadde taking the place of Patrick Kaddu to strengthen their come back quest.

Senegal were handed an opportunity for a second goal two minutes later when Onyango conceded a penalty after hacking down Mane inside the area. The Liverpool superstar failed to double his and his nation's tally as Onyango pulled off a fine save from the resultant spot kick.

The Cranes refused to give up and threw in their last dice in Allan Kateregga ten minutes from time, with Aucho making way.

Kateregga almost answered the call a minute from entering with a shot from inside the area, but Alfred Gomis parried effectively.

Unfortunately for Ugadna, no further threats appeared in the final minutes, as the 2002 runners-up joined Benin in the quarterfinals.
