Asamoah Gyan on Ghana's do-or-die 2019 Africa Cup of Nations tie against Guinea-Bissau

Ghana's record appearance holder and goalscorer Asamoah Gyan has commented on his side's must-win 2019 Africa Cup of Nations clash against Guinea-Bissau on Tuesday evening, claiming he is ready to show his worth.

Gyan, 33, got his first taste of action in Egypt, coming on as a second-half substitute in the 0-0 draw with defending champions Cameroon after missing out on the Black Stars' Afcon opener against Benin.

The former Premier League star, who has netted 51 goals in 108 games for his national team so far, is hoping to make his first start at the 2019 spectacle in Ghana's make-or-break encounter against Guinea-Bissau.

"Every player wants to play but the coach takes the decision," Gyan said, as per footballghana.com.

"I just have to be mentally and physically ready for the game, and any time I'm given the opportunity, I can also prove my worth. I'm ready now."

The forward is seemingly in line to be handed a starting berth, especially given that the four-time Afcon winners have a few injuries, with Newcastle United winger Christian Atsu and striker Thomas Agyepong both ruled out of the match, while defender Jonathan Mensah and skipper Andre Ayew remain doubtful.

Should Gyan find the back of the net against Guinea-Bissau, the former Sunderland star will take his overall goals tally at Afcon tournaments to eight, and would also become the first player to find the back of the net in seven Afcon tournaments (2008, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019).

Victory for Ghana will secure their progression to the last 16 stage of the tournament. The two sides will do duty at the New Suez Stadium tonight, with kick-off set for 18:00 SA time.
