Liverpool star suffers 2019 Africa Cup of Nations injury blow?

A Liverpool star has reportedly left the Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt in order to receive medical treatment on a thigh injury from his club's medical team in England.

Naby Keita was selected for Guinea's final 23-man Afcon 2019 squad, despite sustaining an injury in the Reds' UEFA Champions League semi-final victory over FC Barcelona in May, which coach Jurgen Klopp claimed would keep the former RB Leipzig man sidelined for two months.

Keita, 24, came off the bench in Guinea's 2-2 draw with Madagascar to make his first competitive appearance since Liverpool's fairytale victory over Barca, before being handed a starting berth in his side's 1-0 defeat to Nigeria.

The Champions League winner was unable to last the entire match against the Super Eagles, though, and was substituted in the 71st minute of that clash after sustaining a thigh injury, which ruled him out of Guinea's 2-0 victory over Burundi on Sunday.

Guinea coach Paul Put commented on Keita's injury prior to his side's loss to Nigeria.

"If Naby is 100% ready, we will not hesitate to start with him, but it depends on him too," he was quoted as saying, as per the Daily Mirror.

"You know he had an injury. It was not known if he would participate in the Afcon. We've done everything to prepare Naby.

"He trains at 200%. I think he is physically ready. If he's mentally ready, I think he'll start the game."

The latest reports from Foot224 and Guinean journalist Amadou Makadji suggest that Keita left Egypt on a private jet to consult the expertise of Liverpool's medical team on his thigh injury, and will return to the Guinea camp in three days' time.
