The former Bafana Bafana mentor, who has a lot of experience of playing in north Africa with both the senior national team and Sundowns, is backing the likes of Senagal, Morocco, DRC and hosts Egypt to challenge for the title. This is the first time there will be 24 teams in the competition.

"We are playing in Egypt and you knows the Egyptians fill the stadium. Those are favourites. Morocco is strong, Tunisia will always be there…these North Africans," Mosimane said.

"DRC I like, I hope my friend Florent [Ibenge] does well. Even Aliou Cisse is good and he can do something with Senegal. They've got the players, Sadio Mane and all that. The strikers who have conquered the English Premier League are in the Africa Cup of Nations. How beautiful is that? I think those four or five countries will be there.

Mosimane says South Africans should not put Bafana Bafana under pressure to win the competition.

"I would not put Bafana under pressure. I think Bafana must build the team for the World Cup. For us to be there it means we have achieved, so let's not put too much pressure. If they can win it, then why not? Maybe they can pull a Leicester City and Denmark and win it. But let's not put too much pressure on Bafana."
