Nigeria winger Samuel Kalu has survived a scare after he collapsed during a training session ahead of their opening AFCON clash over the weekend.
Kalu appeared to have fainted during the Super Eagles' pre-match training session on Friday evening as they were preparing to take on Burundi in their opening Group B tie on Saturday.
The 21-year-old, who plays his club football for French outfit Bordeaux, was immediately rushed to the hospital amid fears that it could be a heart condition – similar to what led to the death of former Bidvest Wits and Burundi midfielder Papy Faty earlier this year.
Kalu was subsequently left out of the squad for their opening encounter, but watched on from the stands as his team won 1-0 at the Alexandria Stadium.
Coach Gernot Rohr has since confirmed that tests cleared the rising star of any serious condition.
"Kalu had a problem on Friday when he fell as we were doing some drills on corner kicks," explained the German tactician to CAFOnline.
"He was rushed to hospital and fortunately, the doctors said it was a problem of dehydration, not a heart problem. He didn't drink enough [fluids].
"But he is okay now, he is in high spirits. We will wait for more green-light from the medical team before we can decide whether he can play. He is okay. The rest is up to the medics."
Nigeria, who top their group with three points, will next face second-placed Guinea, who drew their opening encounter with Madagascar, on Wednesday afternoon (16h30).
