South Africa, Ghana, Sudan and Sao Tome and Principe are competing for a place in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations to be held in Cameroon.
Bafana kicked off their qualifying campaign with a 2-0 loss to the Black Stars after being outplayed by the hosts in Accra.
"Ok look, I just feel very disappointed," the Highlands Park head coach tells snl24.com/kickoff.
"You know I thought if we defended well, we'd always have a chance you know because we are very sharp up front. But I thought we did not defend well yesterday.
"We backed off with the first goal, we didn't close down the midfielder. We allowed him too much space to have a shot.
"On the second goal we also, we couldn't switch, we backed off, we just backed off all the time. And you know we allowed him to have a shot, so I just think we didn't close them down. I think from a defensive perspective we need to improve."
Da Gama says he doesn't think the fully packed stadium affected Bafana as they have players who have played under such conditions before.
"No I don't think so. I think players like [Buhle] Mkhwanazi, especially players like [Thulani] Hlatshwayo, they've gone through this many times... I mean they went to play against Nigeria away and beat Nigeria you know.
"So I just think we did not defend very well, and let's see some improvement. Once we defend well, I believe we've got a chance to score to win any game.
"I don't think we should be blaming anybody, I think we should try to fix up and improve as a team instead of blaming individual players or coaches. I think Bafana needs to fix up their mistakes.
"The coach tried something, it didn't work so... you know we still have a good chance, we are playing Sudan and you know that lesser teams... let's allow the coach to fix some of the mistakes, and let's just get better and improve.
"I think also the change after 26 minutes of [Bongani] Zungu, a forced change, also had an effect on the team you know. So I definitely don't think we should blame the coach, let's try and fix up something and move on.
"I think we'll beat Sudan and the other team also, what's its name? [Sao Tome and Principe]. Ja I think we'll beat those teams. I think we still have a chance."
