Spectacular Teboho Mokoena free-kick surprised David Notoane

Tebogo Mokoena surprised many with his sensational free-kick to hand South Africa under-23 a late victory over Ivory Coast in their U23 AFCON tie on Tuesday evening.

SA under-23 now top Group B with four points from two games after their 1-0 victory over the Elephants and need just a point from their final game against Nigeria on Friday to seal their spot in the semifinals.

With South Africa experiencing a blackout of all continental matches following CAF's termination of their broadcast deal with Lagardere, fans were starved of the action.

However, video footage quickly surfaced on Twitter of Mokoena's impressive strike from around 30 yards out, which has been met with great applause since Tuesday evening.

Even coach David Notoane expressed his surprise at the SuperSport United midfielder having stepped up ahead of other set-piece specialists, though the end product is what ultimately mattered.

"Mokoena was a pleasant surprise for us when he stepped up to take that free-kick," Notoane said after the match.

"We have a number of players such as Luther Singh, Sipho Mbule and Kobamelo Kodisang who would normally take free-kicks for us on any given day, however, the lad [Mokoena] felt pretty confident about this one.

"If you ask me, I would not have been happy to have drawn in our second group match [after drawing 0-0 against Zambia in the opener] and I am truly happy that we were able to push for this winning result in this tie."
