UEFA raise doubts over conflicts in FIFA's Fatma Samoura's intervention at CAF

UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has opposed FIFA's proposal to intervene in the reformation of CAF.

FIFA released a statement on Thursday afternoon to announce their plans to take over the running of the Confederation of African Football from its current leadership under Ahmad Ahmad.

Ahmad was recently arrested in Paris and is currently under investigation by the world football governing body's Ethics committee on allegations of corruption and sexual misconduct.

It is with this dark cloud hanging over the CAF boss's head that the federation's executive committee unanimously agreed to call on FIFA for an overhaul.

It was then decided that current Senegalese FIFA general secretary Fatma Samoura would lead the reform on a temporary basis with the option of extending, while also remaining in her capacity at the mother body.

But UEFA are having none of it, having launched an argument against the veracity of the processes undertaken by FIFA in so far as a senior executive member filling two roles simultaneously as well as the possible conflict of interest thereof.

"I cannot be expected to have your proposal examined by UEFA's legal team or consult the European members of the FIFA Council on a subject of such great importance in such a short time," Ceferin wrote to Infantino in a letter published on social media.

"Never in the history of our institutions has the FIFA Secretary General, who under the FIFA Statutes leads the organization, been placed on secondment to take control of a confederation, even with the latter's consent."

Ceferin further pointed out that Samoura doubling up "raises a large number of questions and in particular the likelihood of 'conflicts of interest' as well as doubts over whether it complies with the statutes of FIFA and the CAF."

"You must understand that this is not the type of decision to be taken lightly and in haste," he added. "Without our legal analysis of the situation and consultation of the European members of the FIFA Council, I am not at liberty to approve the proposal you put forward."

The former Slovenian FA boss also requested Infantino to provide "an accurate description of the role and powers of the FIFA General Delegate for Africa [Samoura]" and "an accurate description of the way FIFA would function in her absence."
