Women's World Cup match report USA v England

United States are on course to defend their FIFA Women's World Cup title after beating England to advance to the final.

USA made two alterations from their win over France in the previous round, with Lindsey Horan and Christen Press coming to the fold. Megan Rapinoe was surprisingly benched despite netting a brace in that game.

Jill Ellis was vindicated in starting with Press, as she opened the scoring in the tenth minute with a header coming from a blind-spot at the back post following a cross from Kelley O'Hara.

The Lionesses reacted swiftly as they equalised with their first real attack in the 19th minute courtesy of Ellen White, with another headed goal after a brilliant cross by Beth Mead.

Neville's charges had the momentum after levelling matters, but the Americans managed to restore their lead just after the half-hour mark as Alex Morgan powered a header home after yet another cross delivered in the area, this time by Horan.

England were struggling to get out of their own half in early exchanges of the second stanza as USA were piling the pressure, which saw Phil Neville make his first change two minutes before the hour-mark, bringing on Fran Kirby in place of Mead.

The Lionesses were slowly growing in the game and White found the back of the net in what could have been another equaliser in the 67th minute after slotting home a low effort, but the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) got involved and the goal was ruled out for offside in the build-up.

However, Neville's chargess were given a lifeline with seven minutes remaining as Becky Sauerbrunn caught the back foot of White inside the box and England had the VAR decision going in their favour as the referee awarded a spot-kick. Steph Houghton stepped up to take the penalty but her strike from 12-yards was saved by shot-stopper Alyssa Naeher.

The encounter ended on a sour note for England as Millie Bright received her second yellow card for a dangerous tackle on Morgan as USA held on for the victory.

USA will be defending the crown they won in 2015 against the winner between Netherlands and Sweden in the other semi-final on Wednesday.
