AmaZulu star responds to Chiefs, Pirates links

AmaZulu FC winger Mlondi Mbanjwa, who recently made his Bafana Bafana debut, has responded to circulating reports of a possible move to one of the Big Three in Gauteng.

The 25-year-old has been one of the standout players in an otherwise underwhelming season for Usuthu, where they find themselves battling for a spot in the Top Eight with one match still to play.

Mbanjwa has made 27 appearances for the Durban-based outfit, contributing three goals and one assists in his first season of top-flight football.

His efforts did not go unnoticed by Bafana coach Hugo Broos, who handed Mbanjwa a national team debut in March – in the 0-0 draw against Andorra.

With his profile rapidly growing, reports have linked the player with a possible move away from KwaZulu-Natal to one of either Mamelodi Sundowns, Kaizer Chiefs or Orlando Pirates next season.

"For me to focus more on my work, I just ignore the rumours," Mbanjwa told journalists on Thursday when asked if he is affected by the noise.

"Because after all, it's just rumours. It's not like it's something legit or coming straight, pen and paper (formal offer).

"So, ja, so far, I'm handling everything well."

Mbanjwa has also been named in the 36-man strong Bafana Bafana preliminary squad to take on Nigeria and Zimbabwe in crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June, with the final squad to be announced on Monday.

Before that though, there is the small matter of the KZN Derby against Lamontville Golden Arrows at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
