AmaZulu make major coaching changes, release 11 players

AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu has confirmed major changes to the club's technical team with the departure of Ayanda Dlamini and Romain Folz while as many as 11 players being released by the club.

Usuthu ended an underwhelming campaign in 12th position with a solitary win from their last five matches.

Zungu reshuffled the AmaZulu technical team in April with Folz moved to a technical advisor role with Ayanda Dlamini being appointed as interim coach.

However following an underwhelming run of form under Dlamini the club have decided against retaining his services for next season.

"He (Ayanda) was roped in as an assistant to Romain Folz and for the last six games. He was given sole responsibility as interim head coach," Zungu said.

"His mandate was clear, forget relegation, AmaZulu will not be relegated. I think at the time AmaZulu had 28 points and we said you've got 18 points [to contest] over the next six games  to take AmaZulu into the top eight.

"The objective that we set for him, we agreed with him, was not unreasonable under the circumstances. He didn't accomplish that. To me, It's either you succeed or don't succeed. Nothing personal.

I said to him, 'Ayanda, out of the 18 points we were playing for, you only got five.' Even by Angie Motshekga's 30% pass rate, he did less than 30%.

"I want to invest in Ayanda to earn his badges, to become a world-class coach, he's not ready to be the coach of AmaZulu football club."

Zungu added that Folz had opted against continuing in his technical advisory role to pursue coaching opportunities.

"It is my firm belief that if we stay in contact with Fohloza [Folz], he's got a role to play in AmaZulu going forward.

"But for now, when I said to him I would like to retain him in some technical advisory role, he indicated that he is anxious to get back to the bench and he is exploring a number of options that are exciting for him and, in that case, he would rather resign from the team.

"I've accepted the decision that he was to be on the bench as a coach, not as a technical director or advisor or behind the scenes."

AmaZulu will now be looking for a new coach to lead the club in the 23/24 campaign and Zungu confirmed that discussion have started with potential suitors.
