Mthethwa lifts the lid on Pirates exit

Former Orlando Pirates defender Sandile Mthethwa has lifted the lid on his exit from the Buccaneers and his decision to join AmaZulu.

Pirates announced just over a week ago that they had agreed to mutually terminate the contract of Mthethwa, who struggled for game time in the 2024/25 season.

The former Buccaneers Diski Challenge captain would have had high hopes entering into the new season after he got his breakthrough in the Nedbank Cup, notably scoring a winner against Kaizer Chiefs deep in extra-time in the semi-finals.

Mthethwa could not get any minutes in The Black and White colours this campaign, despite the fact that the Soweto giants had a crisis in the centre of defence, with Tapelo Xoki and Olisa Ndah injured.

"I can never be fed up to a team that made me but it was all about the decision to say I have a lot to give to the country, I still want to represent my country," Mthethwa told journalists at AmaZulu's media day.

"I felt like being outside, not playing was me wasting my time in football, because years are going. I'm 27 now and this is (the time) I'm supposed to be playing, I'm supposed to be a regular at the club.

"So my previous home did not give me that opportunity, so we had a discussion, a mutual agreement, not that Pirates terminated the contract it was just a mutual agreement," Mthethwa said.

The KwaZulu-Natal native defender went on and revealed his best memory at Pirates.

"The biggest memory with Pirates was winning that Nedbank Cup, most people will think that Kaizer Chiefs goal was one of the best memories for me but if I didn't win that cup it would not mean anything," Mthethwa said.

"So I think that was the first cup I won at Pirates that I contributed to, that cup means a lot to me and it's something I will always take with, out of Pirates, to say at least I gave something to Pirates," the 27-year-old added.

Usuthu will be in Premiership action on Tuesday afternoon, Christmas Eve, when they host Mamelodi Sundowns at Moses Mabhida Stadium.
