AmaZulu's 10111 SOS | 'Arthur tried his best at Kaizer Chiefs'

Former Orlando Pirates Head of Youth Development Augusto Palacios has issued free advice to Arthur Zwane following his appointment as AmaZulu FC co-coach.

On Tuesday evening, AmaZulu announced the appointment of Zwane as co-head coach alongside Vusimuzi Vilakazi, who has been occupying a head coach role in their DStv Diski Challenge team.

"It's good for him, it's a new challenge," notes Palacios, speaking to KickOff.

"Coaches have phases. If you look at Rulani Mokwena, Tebogo Moloi, Thabo Senong, they all started from the development, then moved to the reserves, became assistant coaches, and (eventually) head coaches.

"Zwane has been an assistant coach even in the national team, and now he's got an opportunity to be a head coach again.

"There's nothing wrong if AmaZulu gives the opportunity to two young coaches. Zwane played football, so he knows what the element he needs to coach is.

"He needs to take risks. He knows South African football, and he accepted the job because he believes he's capable of doing it," says the ex-Buccaneers coach.

Asked whether he thinks Zwane, together with 'Kanu', will save what appears to be a sinking ship early on in the season, Palacios says only time and results will determine the former winger's fate at his new job.

"He never did anything wrong as a head coach of Kaizer Chiefs, he arrived at a time when they were not winning trophies.

"Also, he tried to include young players, but with the young players, you need to do it gradually.

"But coaching Kaizer Chiefs and coaching AmaZulu is completely different. The players at Chiefs and the players at AmaZulu are different, and the pressure is also different.

"Arthur tried his best at Kaizer Chiefs, but in this job, you need to have character, you need to focus, you need to give your players confidence. That's all."

The young duo's immediate task will be to try and bring down defending champions Stellenbosch FC in the Last 16 of the Carling Knockout on the weekend of 18-20 October.
