Makhaula: 'When Benni came everything changed'

Orlando Pirates midfielder Makhehlene Makhaula has credited former coach Benni McCarthy for a successful spell at previous club AmaZulu.

Makhaula spent three years at AmaZulu and was promoted to captain under McCarthy.

The 33-year-old midfielder moved to Pirates in January and spent spells at Highlands Park and Free State Stars where he lifted the Nedbank Cup.

McCarthy has recently been receiving credit as the reason behind the revival of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, and Manchester United's attack this season.

"At Free State Stars, there were a lot of coaching changes, and I couldn't break into the starting line-up," Makhaula tells KickOff.

"Every coach that came was under pressure to perform and I went to Highlands Park, but I got injured there.

"When I went to AmaZulu, that is where everything changed.

"I think when Benni McCarthy came everything changed. I started to play.

"I started to enjoy my football; I played the kind of football I always wanted to play.

"I think this move to Pirates is because of the hard work I put in under him over years."
