Dearnaley: I scored on my debut

In this edition of My First, KickOff catches up with former AmaZulu FC and Bafana Bafana striker George Dearnaley.

Dearnaley reveals how he got his first red card.

My First School:

"I went to a school called Montclair Primary School. Gordon Igesund and Dillon Sheppard... We all came from the same neighbourhood in Durban.

"I was happy to have lots of friends and kicking a soccer ball all the time and not listening too much to the teachers [laughs]."

My First Kiss:

"I was cared of girls man, yoh! I don't remember that at all, and I was late, around 14 or 15. I stayed away from girls."

My First Favourite Club:

"When I was young, my dad's family lived in Manchester, England, so from 6 years old, I was a Manchester United fan.

"But when I was 16, I went to Umlazi Stadium to watch Mlungisi 'Professor' Ngubane of Durban Bush Bucks play against AmaZulu. So, in 1984, it was the first time I watched township football properly.

"The best players were Mlungisi Ngubane of Bush Bucks and Joel Faya of AmaZulu. And from that day I became a huge AmaZulu supporter."

My First Soccer Boots:

"It was a brand called Gola. Those are the ones I can still remember. I remember they were black with red. I used to wear my boots until they were finished. I would wear them for three years."

My First Goal:

"I scored lots of goals, yoh! But the first one I scored it was in 1990. That was in my first game for AmaZulu, and it was against Fairways Stars. It happened at Kings Park Rugby Stadium. They used to have these pre-season tournaments.

"The first game Kaizer Chiefs played Orlando Pirates, and when AmaZulu played Fairways Stars, the stadium was full. We beat them 3-0. I scored the goal number two with a diving header. Scoring on my debut, you can't forget that."

My First Red Card:

"1992. It was so bad man. Against Wits University FC. I saw Peter Gordon coming charging, and as he came to make his tackle, I just knocked the ball forward and waited, and he kicked me right up in the air.

"And when I landed, I looked at the referee, and he was signalling a 'play-on'. I won't tell you the things I said to the ref, but he stopped the game and gave me a straight red card. I was so angry that he didn't give a free kick for the foul. I learnt a good lesson not to always say what you are feeling inside. The referee was a guy from Durban called Robbie Williams.

"I will never forgive him because he used to officiate some of my matches when I was an amateur, and he allowed them to kick me. Maybe he didn't like me [laughs]."

My First Individual Award:

"I won the Golden Boot in 1992 and was a top goalscorer."

My First Trophy:

"I won only one trophy with AmaZulu, the 1992 Coca-Cola Cup. I still have my medal."

My First Car:

"I saved my money in 1992, the money from the Coca-Cola Cup and Bafana Bafana. I was also the Young Player of the Year runner-up and I was the Player of the Year runner-up. I saved up all that money and bought myself a brand new 1992 Toyota Conquest for R44 000. I paid it in cash. I was so excited."
