Zungu aiming for top four after roping former Real Madrid assistant

AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu is aiming for a return to continental football following the club's unveiling of Pablo Franco as the new head coach.

Zungu announced on Tuesday that following an in-depth interviewing process the club had decided to rope in former Simba SC head coach and Real Madrid assistant coach Franco to take over the helm at the Durban-based outfit.

Already nicknamed 'Cijimbi', by Zungu, Franco takes over the reins from interim head coach Ayanda Dlamini while former head coach-turned-technical director Romain Folz parts ways with the club.

"We are very excited at the acquisition of the service of Pablo Franco Martin," Zungu told the club's media.

"Cijimpi will be landing here in South Africa in the country in the next couple of days. He will be introduced to the players, he will observe and be able to make suggestions on how to go forward.

"At that time we will sit down with him to set the targets, but one of the targets that have been made known to him, which are standard targets, is that we want to finish in the top four.

"AmaZulu are a top-quarter team in South Africa and we want to be known as such. We want to cement our place among the top four teams in South Africa.

"We want to compete for every cup offer. So that is the target we have set for him. There are much more specific targets that we have to discuss and agree with him.

"But the one of finishing in a decent position in the top four and specifically to participate in Africa: in the CAF Champions League or the CAF Confederations Cup is our ambition.

AmaZulu finished 12th in the DStv Premiership standings, just four points adrift of the relegation zone. However, Zungu's ambitions are not far-fetched as Usuthu finished second in the 2020/21 season under Benni McCarthy.
