Zungu issues warning to PSL rivals

AmaZulu chairman Sandile Zungu has issued a warning to their DStv Premiership rivals that the Durban-based outfit would no longer be easily swayed to sell their best players.

Usuthu ended an underwhelming campaign languishing in 12th place in the DStv Premiership standings just four points off the relegated Marumo Gallants.

Zungu believes part of the decline has been due to allowing the sale of some of the club's best players at crucial moments in the season.

Usuthu sold club captain Tapelo Xoki  to Orlando Pirates at the start of the season before agreeing to the transfer another important player in Makhehlene Makhaula during the January window.

"We are not going to stand in the way of your layers, as you would have seen with Makhaula, we were very unfortunate to lose him," Zungu said.

"He signed a pre-contractual agreement with Orlando Pirates and they wanted him at the time that they did and for a nominal amount, we said we are not going to stand in his way, if he wants to [go] as he had spoken to me and we reasoned.

"So he left and it did leave a gaping hole for quite some time, but we are not complaining.

Both Xoki and Makhaula have enjoyed success at their new home, helping Pirates to both the MTN8 and the Nedbank Cup glory.

"We didn't expect to lose Xoki at the time we did but an offer came and Pirates said they would love to have him," Zungu added.

"We said okay fine, let's discuss and he is with Orlando Pirates – a great leader of AmaZulu and so was Cash (Makhaula). Boys that I'm extremely proud of, I love them to bits although they are not with AmaZulu anymore.

So we are not a team that stands in the way of players but I think going forward we will be a lot more resistant to buyers. We will be able to say, 'no, on this one (player) there's no for sale ticket. He is an AmaZulu player. He is not going anywhere

Meanwhile, Zungu also announced that the club has parted ways with as many as 11 players ahead of the new campaign. The list includes striker Lehlohonolon Majoro and possibly Gabadinho Mhango, Thabo Qalinge and Dumisani Zuma among others.
