Bafana rescue a point in opening AFCON qualifier

Bafana Bafana struck late in the second half to rescue a 2-2 draw against in their opening 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Friday night.

Four new faces for Bafana saw Veli Mothwa start in goals, while Rushwin Dortley Oswin Appollis and Lyle Foster given starts

It was the ideal start for the home team who went ahead when Foster broke in-behind following a through pass from Khuliso Mudau and calmly finished off the on-rushing Ismail Watenga.

The Cranes were under more pressure a little later and very nearly conceded again through Appollis' angled drive from the near side, but Watenga collected on this occasion.

Watenga was in it again just before the half-hour mark when he dived across his area and turned a curling shot from Foster behind for a corner-kick.

Uganda showed a bit of fight towards the end of the first half, but didn't manage to get any shots in on target and test the opposite number Mothwa.

The Cranes introduced Allan Okello ahead of the second period and removed Travis Mutyaba, with a keen quest to rally from the one-goal deficit.

It's exactly how it worked out five minutes in when Denis Omedi gained possession from way out of the area and riffled in the top corner.

Uganda gained complete control minutes later after Rogers Mato found time and space right in the centre of midfield and fired well through the gloves of Mothwa.

In an attempt to regain ascendancy, Bafana made a double substitution which saw Rayners come in for Appollis and sacrificed Elias Mokwana for Thapelo Morena.

The host desperately seek to get on even terms and were rewarded in added time when debutant Thalente Mbatha volleyed in from inside the box after meeting a loose ball.

In the end, it finished all square with Bafana turning focus to South Sudan in a few days time before Uganda entertain Congo.

Confirmed line-up:

South Africa: Mothwa, Mudau, Ngezana, Dortley, Modiba, Mokoena, Sithole, Zwane, Mokwana, Appollis, Foster

Uganda: Watenga, Bwomono, Kayanda, Mugbi, Ssekiganda, Mata, Aucho, Mukwala, Mutyaba, Omedi
