In spite of the turnaround made by head coach Hugo Broos, where Bafana finished third at the previous AFCON tournament for the first time since 2000.
And also qualified for the 2025 edition unbeaten, the national association still finds itself in dire situations, with President Danny Jordaan currently facing fraud charges.
McCarthy, who was part of a golden Bafana generation, has suggested that it's a shame that South Africa are being left behind at a time football in the country should be it's highest level yet.
"Why doesn't Bafana have a Clairefontaine [France national football training centre]? What England have [St. George's Park]? Even if you look around the corner, why doesn't Bafana have, what Morocco has, what Algeria has. They are fast improving and leaving us behind," McCarthy said in an interview on 947's MSW.
"We were up there. And when we have a generation that I think is probably on par with what we were when we were all playing in Europe and they are all playing at home and they are this good.
"They don't have the luxury of having to camp, our Bafana village, where we have nice training facilities, pitches. That's where Bafana should be, competing, looking to get into the semi-finals, final of the World Cup, let alone AFCON. That's where this generation should be now," McCarthy said.
