Broos names preliminary Bafana squad for home clashes against Namibia, DR Congo

Head coach Hugo Broos on Tuesday named a 36-man preliminary Bafana Bafana squad for the upcoming international friendly matches against Namibia and DR Congo in September.

The venue for the international double-header will be announced in the coming days with a final 23-man squad to be named next week.

Goalkeeper Sipho Chaine who has impressed for Orlando Pirates alongside defender Keenan Allan are some of the new faces named in Broos' squad.

"Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has named a 36-member preliminary squad for the international friendly matches against Namibia and DR Congo next month," a statement said.

"Broos' charges host Namibia on 9 September 2023 (kick off is at 15h00) and DR Congo on 12 September in matches that are part of the coach's preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations in Côte d'Ivoire in January next year, and for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in November. The venues of the two matches will be confirmed in the coming days.

"The preliminary squad will be trimmed to 23 players next week when Broos announces his final list for the two matches.

"The 2026 FIFA World Cup will be jointly hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States of America. The World Cup qualifiers will start in November this year and wrap up in 2025. The Africa Cup of Nations will be held from 13 January to 11 February 2024."
