Broos confirms Chiefs midfielder to replace Tau

Head coach Hugo Broos has confirmed that a Kaizer Chiefs midfielder has been called to the Bafana squad as a replacement for Percy Tau.

South Africa is set to host Eswatini on Friday in what will be a third of four international friendly matches serving as preparation for next year's Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon), as well as the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers that kick-off in November.

Broos had named his final 23-man string squad for the two matches, however a withdrawal from Al Ahly attacker Percy Tau has seen the Belgian tactician turn to Kaizer Chiefs' attacking midfielder Mduduzi Mdantsane.

Pirates defender, Nkosinathi Sibisi, who was also a doubt after failing to complete Saturday's MTN8 Final against Mamelodi Sundowns due to a concussion, is also at the camp.

"I'm very happy that Sibisi has no problem, it was head contact, a little concussion so he is okay," Broos said at the pre-match press conference on Monday.

"[There was a] little problem with Grant Kekana, he is okay, [he] did an MRI [scan] but he's here. The only problem is here on my right side (Ronwen Williams), he has a little ankle problem but it's okay, we like to have him here with us," Broos said.

"Mdantsane from Chiefs replaces [Percy Tau]."

The nod has come as somewhat of a surprise to some football supporters for a Mdantsane who has started five and completed just one match for Amakhosi this season. On the plus side, the 28-year-old has only missed just one of Chiefs' matches so far.

This will be the second consecutive camp in which a Chiefs player has been called up as a replacement after Pule Mmodi replaced an injured Themba Zwane for friendlies against Namibia and DR Congo in September.

Mdantsane becomes the second Chiefs player at the camp in addition to defensive midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa.
