Broos explains U-turn over Chiefs star

Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained his U-turn of Kaizer Chiefs midfielder Sibongiseni Mthethwa who was recently recalled to the national team after a year-long absence from the national team.

The 29-year-old midfielder made his return to national team duty, coming on as a substitute for Teboho Mokoena during Bafana's goalless draw against Eswatini on Friday night at FNB Stadium.

Before that, Mthethwa had only ever made one appearance for Bafana in September 2022 against Botswana. Before Friday's match, Broos spoke openly about his decision to recall the defensive midfielder.

"The change is that Mthethwa played very good in his last weeks with Stellenbosch," Broos said.

"For me, his performances were improved [from last year] and okay I agree, he was with us [then] but he didn't really satisfy us at that moment.

"But I think now, certainly with his transfer to Kaizer Chiefs, he plays in a top team now, also, he is totally different.

"What I saw from his against Mamelodi Sundowns was a little bit of confirmation of what I saw at Stellenbosch so okay, I think I think he deserves to be here."

"It's up to him now to him now again."

The newly signed Chiefs midfielder will be aiming to get another chance when South Africa take on Ivory Coast on Tuesday. Kick-off is at 21:00 (SA time).
