Cape Town City defender Taariq Fielies aiming for Bafana Bafana berth

The 26-year-old has become a vital cog in the centre of defence for his club, featuring in 18 of the 23 games played by City across all competitions so far this season, performing with aplomb in keeping the opposition’s attacks at bay.

Fielies was given a taste of international action after being picked for the Cosafa Castle Cup squad last year, and when quizzed about his desire to return to the national team following his solid showing for his club, was honest in his self-assessment.

“Every player wants to play to play for his national team, but it depends on the coaches, if they select you,” he said. “It’s up to the selectors, but I feel like I’m doing okay here, so it’s all up to the head coach of the national team.”

When asked about his future, the centre-back says he still dreams of playing abroad, before joking about his next destination.

“Every player’s ambition is to go play in Europe, so that’s mine as well. I’m just waiting for PSG,” he laughed.
