Bafana remain winless at COSAFA Cup

Bafana Bafana registered back-to-back draws in the COSAFA Cup group stages after playing to a stalemate against Botswana.

Bafana named only one change to the eleven that started the 1-1 draw against Mozambique and welcomed in Liam Bern in the place of Brooklyn Poggenpoel.

Polokwane City defender Thabang Matuludi was shown the first chance in anger earlier on from a floated ball to the far post, but he nodded wide of the near corner.

Neither team had a great deal of domination but for large spells it remained a tightly contested battle which had the scoring chances totally minimal.

The Zebras enjoyed moments too albeit late in the first half and had Molaodi Tlhalefang nod wide of the mark after meeting a perfectly weighted supply at the near post.

A substitution ahead of the second half by Bafana saw Mfundo Thikazi, who plays for Royal AM, introduced and Devon Titus withdrawn as the hosts pushed for the opener.

Highly-rated Thabang Sibanyoni looked to give the host the perfect start from the break after getting on the end of a header, but he unfortunately shaved the far post.

Botswana made in-roads of their own too a little to the midway mark of the clash which forced goalkeeper Mondli Mpoto and co to keep a tight line.

Although, much like the opening half – the match remained pretty tight with the scoring chances still minimised as the set of defences held a complete compact shape.

In the end, the spoils were shared which left the Zebras without a goal in the tournament and remarkably all teams in the group tied on two points ahead of the final round of action.

Confirmed line-ups:

South Africa: Mpoto, Matuludi, Moloisane, Dortley, Modise, Bern, Brooks, Kwayiba, Velebayi, Titus, Sibanyoni.

Subs: Xulu, Thikazi, Kammies, Mcaba, Mojela, Cupido, van Wyk, Rhodes, Moremi, Cupido, Mzimela, Poggenpoel.
