Ngezana moves up top at Bafana

After tripling his value from what it was at Kaizer Chiefs just over a year ago, Siyabonga Ngezana will arrive for his next Bafana Bafana camp with another upgrade hat.

Ngezana is not only delivering on the job with FCSB but has contributed in taking the Romanian champions into the automatic qualification places in the Europa League.

FSCB have won three and lost one in the new format of the second-tier European competition, which has each club playing eight games before the knockout stages.

The Romanians have done as good as Tottenham Hotspur and better than Manchester United, who they will play at the end of January.

On Thursday night, Ngezana played 90 minutes in the 2-0 win over Danish club Midtjylland.

This then puts the 27-year-old in the bracket of being the only South African reporting for national duty next week involved in any of the three European club competitions.

While it is currently Europa League duty, Ngezana also played in the UEFA Champions League qualifiers.

The other two South Africans in the Bafana squad have had no European club competition this season.

Luke Le Roux has a relegation play-offs battle to settle at Swedish club IFK Varnamo with matters being settled on Sunday.

Varnamo host IF Elfsborg in a match they need to win with the hope that one of two teams above them – IFK Goteborg and Halmstad – falters so that they avoid the relegation play-offs.

The 24-year-old has played regularly since arriving from Dutch club FC Volendam in July.

The only other player in the Bafana squad attached to a European club is Mihlali Mayambela, who is with Cypriot club Aris Limassol, where he has scored once in eight appearances playing on the wing.

Ngezana has a league assignment on Sunday night against leaders Universitatea Cluj, before the long flight back home for games against Uganda and South Sudan.
