Haskins concerned by shaky Bafana defence

Retired player and television pundit Mark Haskins has voiced concerns about the leaky Bafana Bafana defence following an underwhelming international break.

Hugo Broos' side came under fire last Tuesday after a shock 2-0 defeat to minnows Rwanda in a 2026 world cup qualifier.

Costly errors from Nkosinathi Sibisi and Khuliso Mudau allowed the hosts to capitalise.

"When you think of the spine of the team, your spine must be consistent," Haskins told Sports Night Amplified.

"Your spine must be what your team is built on, and we don't have a solid centre-back pairing."

Mothobi Mvala of Mamelodi Sundowns received praise from Haskins, who sees him as a no-nonsense player who doesn't get easily bullied.

"For me, someone like Mothobi Mvala played the first game, and not the second game. He is that no-nonsense character, doesn't try to be pretty or fancy. He's an ugly player, if I can say that.

"So, he is the type of player that we probably needed in those conditions. But the fact that we don't have a set center-back pairing, and, you know, for me, it was too costly errors from our two center-backs that cost us on the day," Haskins added.

Bafana Bafana's next assignment is the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in the Ivory Coast, with their opening match against Mali on January 16th.
