The South African men's team has been making steady progress since Hugo Broos took over reins. Bafana Bafana climbed one spot to 67th in September last year after back-to-back wins in friendlies against Sierra Leone and Botswana.
The latest ranking of 62nd is Bafana's highest ranking in recent years but still a far cry from 1996 when South Africa's Afcon-winning squad ended the year in 19th position, even going as high as 15th at one point, and in 2000, when they last featured in the top 20.
Although friendlies count for few points, Broos will be looking to collect a few more points towards Bafana's ranking when South Africa play friendly matches in September or October as part of preparations for Next year's Afcon set to played in January 2024.
