In this edition of Locker Room Secrets, legendary goalkeeping coach Alex Heredia shares his experiences during his tenure with Bafana Bafana.
Heredia has trained goalkeepers in 132 matches with the national team and was also responsible for the goalkeeping department at the likes of Orlando Pirates, Platinum Stars, and SuperSport United.
Who was always late at Bafana Bafana?
"Reflecting on my time with the Bafana Bafana, which encompassed 132 games, it sometimes feels surreal. There were both good moments and challenging ones.
"The locally based players were always punctual when called up for the national team. The issue arose with foreign-based players like Benni McCarthy, Quinton Fortune, and Steven Pienaar from Ajax Amsterdam.
"Delays often occurred due to club commitments or flight issues.
"Sometimes their travel arrangements weren’t finalised on time, leading to arrivals just two days before a match, which disrupted training sessions and frustrated the coach."
Any interesting rituals by a player before a match?
"Players have their own unique practices, whether they involve muti or religious beliefs. Occasionally, there would be some muti organised for the entire team, a common practice across Africa, not just in South Africa. The players hold these beliefs strongly.
"Siyabonga Nomvethe had his own personal rituals. He was deeply involved in his practices and was seen as one of the leaders in this regard."
Who was the jokester?
"The team had several jokers who brought joy to the group. Pienaar, Itumeleng Khune, and Senzo Meyiwa were always cheerful and contributed significantly to the team's spirit."
Who was the singer?
"Meyiwa was the main singer when he was part of the team. He was the one who initiated the singing."
Who was the best- and worst-dressed?
"Teko Modise stood out as the best-dressed. He always displayed a smart and original style, consistently bringing innovation. Close to him in style was Stanton Fredericks.
"The worst-dressed during my time with Bafana Bafana was Lerato Chabangu. He lacked any sense of colour co-ordination and always seemed to grab whatever clothes were closest to his bed."
Who never showered?
"Everyone showered as it was a team rule, and no one tried to skip it. However, it could be challenging in countries like Nigeria or Congo, where showers were a luxury."
Which Bafana coach gave the best team talk?
"Gordon Igesund’s team talks were both adequate and effective. Carlos Alberto Parreira also delivered impactful team talks that resonated well with the players."
