'Bafana must take the three points at all costs'

Former Bafana Bafana coach Augusto Palacios believes Hugo Broos' troops have no reason not to collect all three points in their AFCON qualifier against Congo-Brazzaville on Friday.

South Africa face Congo in a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at FIFA 2010 World Cup venue Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, scheduled for 19:00.

On paper, Bafana, who are ranked 11th in Africa, hold the upper hand compared to their opponents, who are ranked 18 places below.

Asked by this publication if that will mean a walk in the park for the home side, Palacios said captain Ronwen Williams and Co. will still have to do the job on the pitch.

"No way!," exclaims Palacios, before adding: "All games are difficult. You can't undermine anyone. Bafana players must all play as a team, simple. Everyone will [have to] contribute to the success."

"Tonight they must take the three points at all costs. It is our home game and players look ready with Williams back in goals.

"All players play games to compete, and the coach, Hugo Broos, he knows the players.

"There are six points that we can take if we win both home and away. We play in a good stadium tonight, and the crowd will give Bafana Bafana support," he says.

The ex-Orlando Pirates coach has encouraged the team to continue with their positive approach to games as well as winning mentality.

"It's an opportunity to start the qualifiers convincingly because in November, there's another two games.

"More players must be confident because we have good players, young and experienced. Everyone must think positively to represent his country, and people must go to the stadium to support Bafana in all competitions.

"Bafana must play in full stadiums. Good luck."
