De Sa: Bafana keepers lack experience

In this week's edition of our goalkeeping feature, KickOff speaks to former Bafana Bafana, Mamelodi Sundowns, and Moroka Swallows legendary goalkeeper Roger De Sa looks at the three goalkeepers that will be representing South Africa in the upcoming AFCON qualifiers.

Sipho Chaine, Veli Mothwa, and Ricardo Goss have all been selected for back-to-back matches against Uganda and South Sudan on 6 and 10 September

With Ronwen Williams still recovering from injury, De Sa believes this will be a good opportunity for the three keepers to gain international experience.

"Before deciding on who should start in Ronwen's absence, you got to look at the preparations, the type of game Uganda play or Sudan play. You have to look at who might suit those attacks or otherwise you just go with the next in form goalkeeper," De Sa tells KickOff.

"You have to look at the guys that are planning and the reasons why they selected those goalkeepers. If you select them, they must be able to play; otherwise, what's the point of selecting them?

"I think either one of the three should be able to do the job that is required, you can't just rely on only one of the goalkeepers.

"There are a few more that they could have selected,; I think the boy from Stellenbosch has done pretty well [Sage Stephens], and Darren Keet also has done well at Cape Town City - he's been consistent. There are just enough goalkeepers to fill Ronwen Williams's space.

"It all depends on the type of opposition and the type of defence, sometimes you pick a goalkeeper because he plays well with the two centre-backs, sometimes because he's good at crosses. It all depends on the planning and the strategy," he added.

"Mothwa, Chaine, Goss, I think you could say they all lack experience because they haven't been allowed to play because it's been Ronwen Williams all the time.

"So if you want them to gain experience, then you've got to let them play. This is an ideal opportunity to throw one of them in to see where we are, or maybe even two since it's two games.

"I don't know what is the thinking behind it, but I think this is an opportunity to develop somebody else.

"All three of them... I think they are the best that we have at the moment, they are playing for big clubs. They know the pressure."
