Bafana's potential stumbling block on road to AFCON pointed out

Football analyst and former Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper William "Cool Cat" Shongwe has backed South Africa to go all the way in their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers... but has sent a warning!

2023 AFCON bronze medalists Bafana Bafana learned of who they will be facing in Group K after Thursday's draw that was held in Johannesburg.

Hugo Broos' charges have been paired with Uganda, Congo, and South Sudan in the race to qualify for the 35th edition of the biennial competition, with the top two finishers qualifying for the tournament to be hosted in Morocco from 21 December 2025 to 18 January 2026.

Shongwe says Bafana should try by all means to win their home matches.

"The chances are big for South Africa, the only country that might be a stumbling block is Congo," Shongwe notes, speaking to KickOff.

"They haven't achieved much of late, but I know South Africa always struggled in the past against Congo, so they can be a stumbling block.

"Uganda as well, they've been improving in the last few years, but just like with South Sudan, I believe Bafana Bafana have a chance there.

"It will all depend on Bafana Bafana on the day if they will come out guns blazing.

"So, it's a good draw for Bafana Bafana.

"There is a big chance that Bafana Bafana will top their group. Bafana Bafana has moved up the CAF rankings, there's a lot that has happened and that is very positive for Bafana Bafana.

"As unpredictable as those three countries are, on paper Bafana Bafana has an edge over them. Without a doubt, South Africa are favourites in their group.

"In these types of games, away you go for a point and try to collect all three points at home.

"If you consistently do that, then you have a big chance."
