'There will be games where we need someone like him' - Broos banking on Bafana star

Head coach Hugo Broos had doubled down on his stance that having a striker of the profile of striker Lebo Mothiba will come in handy for Bafana Bafana in future.

Bafana stretched their unbeaten run to nine matches after seeing off a stubborn DR Congo side 1-0 at Orland Stadium thanks to a first-half goal by Lyle Foster.

Mothiba, who was called up to the national team since the 2019 Afcon, came on as a late substitute and DR Congo as Broos looked to keep Congolese on the back foot.

As Bafana edged closer to next year's Afcon, Broos has explained why he believes Mothiba will be a key player for the national team.

"Like I said in the first day of the camp at the press conference that Mothiba is a profile of a player we don't have," Broos said.

"So, I'm very happy with what I saw certainly, for the half an hour or 20 minutes he played played. We don't have a player like this and there will be games where we need someone like him; strong in keeping the ball, dangerous with the head and big.

"This was also again what I said already, [that this camp is for] looking at players that we didn't know so well, put them in the team and see what we get.

"So, I think Mothiba was a positive thing."

Bafana will return to action when they face Eswatini on 13 October in an international friendly.
