Ellis makes promise to Banyana legend after 6-year wait

Desiree Ellis has vowed to give a chance to a veteran Banyana Banyana player who is set for a major milestone 150th appearance for Banyana, drawing lessons from Janine Van Wyk's 'heartbreaking' incident.

Veteran defender Van Wyk said she was left 'heartbroken' after not being given a chance  to make a record breaking appearance as the most capped African player back in the 2024 CAF Women's Olympic qualifiers against DR Congo in 2023.

The experienced defender had been called up from camp however, Ellis lost track of time due to the intensity of the encounter, as Banyana desperately needed the result and the final whistle blew.

Of course Van Wyk later got the record breaking cap when Banyana played Burkina Faso in the CAF WAFCON qualifiers in December 2023.

Ellis, who is now preparing Banyana for friendly match against Malawi to be played at UJ Soweto campus, has vowed that 37-year-old Nompumelelo Nyandeni will play a 150th match.

Hear what Ellis had to say on Nyandeni's chances, and more comments from the WAFCON-winning coach, in the video below!
