Banyana denied narrow victory in Senegal

Banyana Banyana were denied a narrow victory as Senegal claimed a late equaliser to force a 1-1 draw in an international friendly on Saturday evening.

First-choice goalkeeper Kaylin Swart remained between the sticks before defender Lebogang Ramalepe captained the team, with Sibulele Holweni and Amogelang Motau notably given rare starts.

It wasn't the easiest of starts for the African champions and to a degree battle to contain the host who attempted to register the early breakthrough but in the end to no avail.

Nonetheless, the balance of play became even towards the half-hour mark and Motau in addition to Noxolo Cesane come in the thick of things to hold their guard against the Teranga Lions.

Banyana's first chance followed suit a little to the closing quarter when Holweni worked a bit of magic to get further forward, but unfortunately didn't rattle the net.

With a score-less half, the African champions made a change upon the resumption and had Cesane make way for Kholosa Biyana to step on the field of play.

Biyana didn't struggle to get a look in proceedings but came close to making the deadlock with a succession of chances, but was thwarted by solid piece of goalkeeping.

The South African team were on the edge in the closing exchanges and a goal-line clearance from Ramalepe was needed to keep matters on an even slate.

Banyana, though, still pushed on and grabbed the front-foot pretty much against the run of play when Nthabiseng Majiya pounced with the Teranga Lions caught wanting.

The Teranga Lions got back on level terms when Mbayang Sow fired in the from penalty spot in the last minute following a foul in the box.

With no further drama in the closing seconds, the spoils were share in the first-ever engagement between Banyana and Senegal.
