Jomo Sono hails Banyana - 'The whole nation is proud'

Former Bafana Bafana head coach Jomo Sono has hailed Banyana Banyana's historic achievement in reaching the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup.

Banyana clinched a dramatic 3-2 win over Italy to advance to the Round of 16 stage to setup a clash against the Netherlands.

"The whole nation is proud and happy," Sono tells KickOff.

"I think Banyana had a point to prove. They wanted to prove they are not mercenaries as they were labelled.

"I'm impressed with their style and they are playing well. Our only weakness is we can't defend corner kicks.

"We get punished during corner kicks because we don't have the height.

"That's the only thing coach Desiree Ellis needs to fix.

"I think they are now used to playing at such a level, it's always not easy the first time.

"It is not easy to play at such a big stage. In the previous World Cup, they suffered stage fright.

"Thembi Kgatlana and Hilda Magaia impressed me the most so far, they can play.

"Those two are our match-winners against the Netherlands on Sunday. It will be difficult, but they are our match winners.

"It's football, both countries have a chance. It's 90 minutes, it's 11 against 11.

"They must just play their normal football and enjoy themselves. If you look carefully, our defence only cracks during set pieces.

"We should avoid giving away set pieces in dangerous areas."
