Both national teams have qualified for the Olympics next month, and have been involved in a series of friendly matches as they continue their preparations for the global spectacle: the Under-23’s recently travelled to Japan for a friendly, while Banyana have tested their mettle against the Netherlands, with a friendly lined up against world champions USA this weekend.

According to Mumble, Safa have spent around R15-million to prepare Banyana, while an estimated R10-million has been spent on the Under-23 team.
"So far for Banyana we probably must have spent around R15-million because you know conditions are different for Banyana as opposed to men’s football," Mumble said.
"For the men's Under-23 team, for the most part they play for professional clubs so they get regular playing time week in and week out.
"For Banyana it is different - unfortunately the Sasol league is a provincial and not a national League, so we had to give them more preparation. They had to come to camp since November last year to get that extra little bit of preparation so we had to put more resources in their preparations.
"It’s not that the Under-23s are not properly prepared; they have been getting good game time,” he continued.
"On them, I think we spent - I stand to be corrected - somewhere between R8-10 million."
Mumble also added that the South African Sports and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) will take over the funding a week before the Olympics.
"Sascoc comes in just a week before we leave for the Olympics, but so far we have been raising all the funds for the preparations of our national teams,” he said.
"We managed to get some assistance from the national lottery board and there is a lot of funds that we managed to secure from the Safa account to make sure that these teams are properly prepared."
South Africa’s U-23s have been drawn in Group A alongside hosts Brazil, Denmark and Iraq for the global showpiece, while Banyana will lock horns with Brazil, Sweden and China.
