Six Banyana players nominated for CAF Women's Player of the Year

South Africa has taken centre stage with six players named on the 30-member nominee preliminary list for the CAF women's player of the year award – the most nominees from one country.

Mamelodi Sundowns duo of goalkeeper Andile Dlamini and defender Bambanani Mbane are the local faces on the list while  Refiloe Jane, Thembi Kgatlana, Jermaine Seoposenwe and Linda Motlhalo make up the rest of South Africa internationally based players to make it on to the list.

Banyana are currently in Morocco as one of 12 nations participating in the 2022 African Women's Cup of Nations (AWCON).

All six players nominated were in the starting 11 on Monday when Banyana defeated AWCON defending champions Nigeria by 2-1.

Elsewhere, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies, who made history last year by becoming the first-ever winners of the CAF Women's Champions League, are nominated for the CAF Women's Club of the Year.

Masandawana players Andile Dlamini, Bambanani Mbane, Zanele Nhlapo and Andisiwe Mcoyi are nominated for the CAF Women's Interclub Player of the Year award - an award for players based on the continent.

The winners from these nominees will be revealed at the official 2022 CAF Awards ceremony to be held on 21 July 2022 in Morocco, just days before the AWCON Final.

For now, Banyana will turn their attention to tomorrow's clash against debutants Burundi for matchday 2 of the 2022 AWCON, before a clash with another debutant in Botswana on Sunday, 10 July.
